Cinema Spectacular came to be in 2014 when fest founder Laurel K Brown was hard pressed to find a venue to screen her first indie short film. Seeing an opportunity to share a screening venue, she canvased peers for their most-recent projects and the first festival came to be.
Since then the festival has continued to grow into a celebration of Canadian cinema, accepting submissions from coast-to-coast-to-coast. It's a big country and it's full of stories, talent, and the passion to make great films. We are a volunteer-run festival - run by a gamut of local filmmakers, writers, actors, and technicians.

Hi - I'm Laurel. I started Cinema Spectacular in 2014 as a way to screen a short film I had just completed nestled in with wonderful projects from my peers. Since then, the festival has been an immense passion project to bring together filmmakers and filmgoers from across the country to appreciate what local cinema has to offer. It's been an immense joy and an endless challenge to get this festival off the ground every year, and I have appreciated the support, enthusiasm, and opportunity that has come from our filmmakers, volunteers, sponsors, and supporters over the years.
I work locally in Vancouver as a cinematographer and camera/lx technician.
